Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the manufacturers of Tylenol, claiming the firms hid potential risks that the medication posed to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action comes a month after Former President Trump promoted an unverified association between consuming acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - throughout gestation and autism in offspring.

Paxton is filing suit against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the drug, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he stated they "misled consumers by profiting off of suffering and pushing pills regardless of the risks."

The company asserts there is insufficient reliable data linking Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These corporations lied for decades, knowingly endangering numerous people to boost earnings," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the perpetuation of misinformation on the safety of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "continuously evaluated the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a verified association between using acetaminophen and autism."

Groups acting on behalf of physicians and healthcare providers share this view.

ACOG has said paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is a restricted selection for pregnant women to address pain and elevated temperature, which can pose significant medical dangers if ignored.

"In multiple decades of research on the utilization of paracetamol in gestation, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any trimester of pregnancy causes neurological conditions in young ones," the group stated.

This legal action cites latest statements from the Trump administration in asserting the drug is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, the former president generated worry from health experts when he told women during pregnancy to "resist strongly" not to use acetaminophen when ill.

The FDA then published an announcement that doctors should consider limiting the consumption of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism in young ones has remains unverified.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had vowed in April to undertake "a massive testing and research effort" that would establish the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But authorities cautioned that identifying a sole reason of autism - believed by scientists to be the consequence of a intricate combination of genetic and external influences - would prove challenging.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of lifelong neurodivergence and disability that influences how people perceive and interact with the world, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is running for the Senate - claims Kenvue and J&J "deliberately disregarded and tried to quiet the research" around paracetamol and autism.

The case seeks to make the corporations "remove any promotional materials" that states Tylenol is reliable for pregnant women.

This legal action echoes the grievances of a collection of parents of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the producers of acetaminophen in 2022.

The court rejected the case, stating studies from the plaintiffs' authorities was lacking definitive proof.
