A minimum of 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's history.

Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.

Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the security action, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Government representatives said at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the mission, along with numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by civil and military police was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in the city.
