Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
An freshly coined term emerged a couple of months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to doctors like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for physicians to care for a minor who has lost their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities rejects these accusations, just as it denies each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed harmony has now become a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
