Chicago White Sox Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Deal.
In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract with the high-profile player.
Contract Details and Player Perks
The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the final year.
Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for being named the MVP award.
- $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for placing between fourth and tenth.
- Another $250,000 for being named the ROY honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his permission and makes him a free agent at the termination of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Compensation and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows get a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.
Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever player from Japan to represent the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 soon, bolsters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the American League Central but showing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
