Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen people were hurt in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

All three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who escaped following the blast was apprehended not long after. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area showed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

He believed the blast had taken place on a floor above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
