Abstract Painting in AndalucĂ­a

This historic hillside village, a ancient white village in southern Spain, approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the stimulating backdrop for this creative getaway. Participants of every skill level – even novices – will discover how to plan and create non-representational pieces. A portion of the time will be spent outdoors, working on structured activities in the open. These charcoal drawings and watercolour studies will then be worked on in the workspace, with attendees producing a number of interpretive scenes in acrylic paint to be displayed in the local community. Participants has exclusive access of the venue, which is set around an open courtyard and has a roof terrace with views over the hills. The cost encompasses five days’ painting tuition; all meals; and an outing to the nearby fortress and other points of interest.

Ottolenghi-Inspired Culinary in the Algarve

This Mediterranean foodie getaway, based at a riverside villa in the inland Portuguese region, is draws inspiration from the vegetarian dishes of renowned chefs. Guests will master the art of meze spreads, attend a falafel-making workshop, refine brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses including a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are visits to the village market and a local vineyard to sample Portuguese wines, along with free time for walks by the Funcho River, to unwind on the deck or swim in the pool. The villa, a former farmhouse, has multiple rooms, plus glamping tents in the grounds.

Hip Hop in Buckinghamshire

Hip Hop Don’t Stop is an uplifting, welcoming three-day dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The daily schedule throughout the camp is a party-style warm-up session, followed by three 90-minute workshops teaching various street dance styles, then an 60-minute jam to demonstrate new moves. Participants are divided into groups based on ability and experience, so it is perfect for those who are completely new to street dance, all the way to experienced performers or instructors. The camp doesn’t include lodging but there are several hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is under an hour by train into London.

Maritime Singing Break in Cornwall

St Ives is the ideal location for a sea shanty weekend. Participants will be taught historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at writing their own. The schedule includes vocal warmups, breath control techniques, performance tips and a closing performance. The retreat is held in a country house with views of St Ives Bay. All meals are provided, including a Cornish cream tea on arrival, breakfast options, packed lunches and three-course dinners. Traditional rum, alas, is not included. Creative Writing in Crete

Author and tutor Greg Mosse runs the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He covers everything from story structure, character development, setting and tension, to submitting work to agents. The holiday is held at a traditional complex in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – ten one- and two-bedroom cottages are set around a garden and pool (companions are welcome to share). The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of courses covering sustainability: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. This two-day course will help attendees get to grips with the fundamentals of beekeeping, study the biology of bees and learn about their ecological importance. It is designed to produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. The weekend is also a opportunity to relax in the centre's sustainably managed woodlands, which are habitat for polecats, otters, dormice, bats and rare birds. Bed and breakfast the evening prior is £80, and full-board accommodation for the weekend is £97.

Sailing for Beginners in Essex

These recently launched weekend sailing courses are spent on dinghies and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary.
